SOLAR MINIGRIDS MALAWI

Rural Energy Access through Social Enterprise and Decentralisation (EASE)

The Scottish Government funded EASE project delivers improved energy access for some of the most vulnerable people in Malawi, building sustainable community energy businesses around microgrids and energy centres, whilst improving the enabling environment for sustainable energy development through training, advocacy and mainstreaming of energy planning by District Energy Officers.

SOLAR MINIGRIDS MALAWI

Innovation Exchange for SDG impact through Solar Microgrids in Malawi

A virtual secondment to directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals in Malawi working with United Purpose Malawi (UPM), applying UoS power system expertise in a developing country context to embed UoS as an enabling technical partner to a solar microgrid developer and deliver effective knowledge exchange built on previous smart grid EPSRC research. As well as seeing the microgrid installed, the outputs included a detailed business model and strategy for UPM to deploy a fleet of microgrids nationally across Malawi, and dissemination of project outputs to inform the nascent microgrid sector in Malawi.

SOLAR MINIGRIDS MALAWI

United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility African Minigrids Programme

The UNDP-supported, GEF-financed Africa Minigrids Program (AMP) aims to support African countries to increase energy access by reducing the cost and increasing commercial viability of low-carbon minigrids. The AMP project in Malawi is directly aligned with the National Energy Policy objective to increase access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, efficient and modern energy for every person in the country. Work package 2.1 of the AMP project in Malawi aims to demonstrate innovative business models that can encourage private sector participation in minigrid development in the country through piloting Productive Uses of Energy on existing minigrids in Malawi.

IAA Exploring opportunities for electric cooking on mini-grids in Malawi

This project has involved collaboration with international partners in Malawi and Germany to enable carbon savings and positive health impacts through electric cooking on mini-grids in Malawi. This knowledge exchange project funded through EPSRC’s Impact Acceleration Account saw collaboration between UoS, carbon credit organisation atmosfair and Malawian mini-grid developer MEGA. Through analysis of case study data from piloting eCook devices on a hydro mini-grid in Mulanje, technical and social data analysis from smart meter logging and social impact surveys allowed opportunities and challenges for the scale up of eCook in Malawi to be investigated, with key recommendations to the private and public sector for facilitating their deployment.

Asset Management of Islanded Microgrids: Internationalising Scotland’s Learning

This project has increased the social and economic impact of renewable energy microgrids through addressing their sustainability challenges, by capturing lessons learned over the past 20 years of community microgrid ownership in Scotland and to develop an asset management strategy for microgrid operations in Scotland and internationally. Scottish Island microgrids were evaluated through a case study framework using sustainability indicators to draw out key learning to make microgrids more efficient and sustainable.

Scottish Government Global Renewables Centre

The centre aims to enable effective knowledge sharing and access to expertise between RE stakeholders in partner countries and Scotland, progress access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all (Sustainable Development Goal 7) based on specific country needs and enhance Scotland’s reputation as a good Global Citizen.

Assessing market potential and use case in Africa of novel flow batteries: Techno-economic analysis and stakeholder engagement

This project investigated the market potential for a Single Liquid Flow Battery (SLIQ) developed by Scottish company StorTera for deployment in Africa. Stakeholder engagement was conducted to inform market opportunity mapping and techno-economic modelling was conducted to provide comparison insight against competitor technologies. Specific user and business cases were explored to demonstrate how effective the technology will be, with recommendations provided for next steps to take the battery to market including initial scoping and plans for a pilot project. I led this work package which included supervising an MSc student, conducting stakeholder interviews, using techno-economic modelling software and reporting to the Faraday Institute.

Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS): Global Market Assessment

The FCDO funded Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) project is a partnership comprising seven UK universities and international partners, including the World Bank. To support the aim of the MECS programme, “to rapidly accelerate the transition from biomass to clean cooking on a global scale”, this project has produced an updated global market assessment (GMA) with an accessible, updatable database and disseminate country-specific information targeted at the needs of key stakeholders.
